Math 5 week of March 26 – 30

We have been working on mid chapter review (page 193) and completed it today. Wednesday and Thursday we will be work on lessons 6 (pages 194 to 197) and 7 (pages 198 to 200). Importantly extra practice and review is available on line at the following links.

Math homework and what we are working on.

We are working on multiplication.

7×8 = using what is called the doubling strategy. It means you see that 2×4=14 double that to 2×14=28 and finally double that to 2×26=56. Why you ask? it helps with developing tricks for mental math and lays some basis for fractions and exponents.

7×9 = using the tens strategy, 7×10=70 take away 7 and you get 63. This reinforces the multiplication by ten and the idea that multiplication is the adding of groups. 7+7+7+7…

Homework was 4,5 and 7 page 182. Next week we are on to multiplying by 10′s to thousands, having and doubling, and multiplying numbers close tens.

After too long a break I am back and we will resume our regular postings.
This week the class is working on finishing and mailing their letters for the Great Canadian Mail race.

We are also learning about the body and specifically the respiratory system in science.

Lit Circles are in full operation with the students reading many different stories. I hope we will see some of their work posted in the next few days.

In socials the grade 5,s are completing reports on how, why and when different people came to Canada. I am looking forward to the oral presentations next week.
